LATER LIFE
Dred Scott's later life In 1836, when Scott was about 37 years old, he met and married 19-year-old Harriet Robinson during his travels with Emerson. Harriet's owner, a former army doctor, then transferred her rights to Emerson. Later, Emerson and his wife released Dred and Harriet in Wisconsin, a free territory, but the Scotts decided to travel from a slave-free area to meet the Emersons in a slave-holding area. In 1846, Dr. Emerson died of tuberculosis. It was then that Scott decided to try to buy his freedom from Emerson's wife. He offered her $300 but she refused. This was when Dred Scott decided to fight for his freedom in court.
