Dred Scott's Accomplishments Although Dred did not win his case, positive things came out of it. The case highly influenced the Civil War because the decision made Northerners even more angry at the South. Also, Peter Blow's son, the son of Scott's original owner, bought and freed Dred and Harriet. Dred Scott died on September 17, 1858. He was around 59 years old. The cause of Scott's death was tuberculosis, a disease caused by bacteria that attacks the lungs, kidney, spine, and brain.
