dreD Scott's Early life
Dred Scott was born in 1799 in Southampton County, Virginia. Scott was first owned by Peter Blow's family, but no one is sure if he belonged to the Blow's from birth, or later. When Scott lived on the plantation, he worked as a farmhand, craftsman, handyman, and a stevedore. He was never taught to read or write. In the early 1830s, Scott was sold to Dr. John Emerson. Scott then made a series of travels with Emerson to Huntsviile, Alabama, and to St. Louis, Missouri.
FUN FACT: Some people think Dred Scott had an older brother name Dred and the more known Dred Scott's original name was Sam, but his brother died so he changed it to Dred.
